Gender,  Racial, and Disciplinary Differences in the Graduate School Experience

Abstract
This project will use time gained from the teaching release provided by the Research Professorship to assemble an interdisciplinary team that would design, write, and submit a grant proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for a stndy that examines gender, racial/ethnic, and disciplinary differences in the U.S. graduate school experience.  The intent is to gain a better understanding of why some stndents pursue careers in academia, while others (especially women and racial/ethnic minorities in STEM fields) do not.  Since 2007 I have been co-PI of an ongoing mixed-method data collection effort at Rice University that will serve as the pilot stndy for the larger-scale, nationally representative project that I will propose in my NSF grant application.  In the pages below I discuss the relevance of this research, describe the pilot stndy at Rice, and outline how I would use the time provided by the Research Professorship to construct a competitive project suitable for NSF funding.
